The Emotional Mix
Excitement to reclaim part of your identity can sit right alongside guilt at leaving your baby. Both feelings are valid and common. Naming them, rather than judging yourself, makes the transition easier.
Practical Preparation
- Sort childcare well in advance; a trusted nanny, daycare, or family arrangement.
- Do a trial run before day one so the first separation is not also the first test of the plan.
- If breastfeeding, plan pumping and storage, and check your workplace's space for it.

Knowing Your Rights in India
- The Maternity Benefit Act provides eligible women 26 weeks of paid leave, with provisions including creche facilities in larger establishments.
- Understand your specific entitlements and discuss any phased return or flexibility before you leave.
The First Weeks Back
- Expect a wobbly start; both you and your baby are adjusting.
- Build a tight handover routine with your caregiver, including photos or updates if it reassures you.
- Lower your standards at home temporarily; you cannot run two full systems at full tilt overnight.
Guilt does not measure love. Plenty of children with working parents thrive; what they need is warmth and stability, not your constant presence.
