Flexible Work and the Modern Parent

The Promise and the Trap

Flexible work can cut commutes, allow more time with your child, and ease the juggle. The trap is the disappearing boundary, working through nap time, parenting through meetings, and never being fully present for either.

Setting Boundaries

- Define clear working hours and, as far as possible, protect them.

- Arrange real childcare for focused work; you cannot fully do both at once.

- Create a physical or ritual boundary that signals work is over.

Making It Sustainable

- Communicate your availability honestly with your employer or clients.

- Batch deep work into protected blocks rather than scattering it.

- Accept that some days the balance tips one way; aim for balance over a week, not every hour.

For Founders and the Self-Employed

Without a fixed structure, it is easy to be always on. Build your own guardrails, defined hours, a shutdown routine, and delegated childcare, so that being your own boss does not mean being on call to two demanding jobs at once.
