The Identity Shift
Becoming a parent can feel like your old self has been packed away. Mourning some of that freedom, while loving your child fiercely, is normal and human. You are not ungrateful; you are adjusting to an enormous change.
Why It Matters
- A parent with some sense of self is more patient and present.
- Children benefit from seeing adults with interests and friendships.
- Pouring everything into the child can lead to burnout and resentment.

Small Reclamations
- Protect a little time for something that is only yours; reading, exercise, a hobby, a friend.
- Keep at least one or two adult friendships alive, even loosely.
- Let your standards of a 'perfect parent' soften; good enough is genuinely good.
Navigating Cultural Expectations
In many Indian settings, especially for mothers, total self-sacrifice is praised as the ideal. Quietly resisting that, by taking a walk, an evening out, or simply some uninterrupted time, is healthy, not neglectful. A parent who is allowed to be a person too raises happier children.
